Chapter Monthly Meeting
Learn about methane dangers and California’s efforts to reduce methane emissions from landfills, wastewater plants and the oil/gas industry.

The super-pollutants methane, refrigeration chemicals and black carbon account for as much as 40% of global heating. Yet because of their short atmospheric life, these uber-powerful greenhouse gasses are among mankind’s few fast-acting climate solutions, making them strategic targets for climate activism.
Our June meeting will present the status of efforts to reduce the 24% of California’s methane emissions that come from landfills and municipal wastewater plants, and to reduce the 13% that come from the oil and gas industry, including many thousands of orphaned and abandoned wells. It should be noted that the 13% statistic is believed, by experts, to be deeply underestimated.
Both arenas will benefit from two new methane detection satellites, slated for launch in 2023, as well as sensor drones for local pinpointing. What other policy levers are available or in campaign-mode at this time? What policy gaps remain? Join us for the presentation and find out!

Bill Murphy
Bill Murphy co-chairs the landfill methane coalition team at Climate Action California. A graduate of the 2017 Climate Reality training, he also handles legislative comment letters for the current session for Elders Climate Action’s 1,250 California members, as well as writing sign-on constituent letters and constituent phone scripts for the new activist phone app Climate Action Now. Bill also volunteers for Climate Action California and is a longtime member of both the Climate Reality Silicon Valley Chapter and Elders Climate Action CA.
Dave Benzanson
Dave will tackle the methane from the oil and gas industry portion of our presentation. After completing a Ph.D. and graduating from a career as a CA licensed clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist, he has taken up volunteer work. Currently he is most active in Physicians for Social Responsibility and Climate Action CA.
