| Climate change and homelessness are two of the biggest issues facing California today. To alleviate homelessness, we have to build our way out of the affordable housing crisis, but we must do so in a way that is equitable, sustainable, and resilient, as real estate accounts for ~40% of all GHG emissions.
Come hear how CA's largest privately-funded affordable housing developer, SoLa Impact, is tackling both. Ekta Naik, SoLa's Head of Development, is going to talk about their efforts to incorporate sustainability into their ground-up new construction projects in LA's low-income Black and brown communities. One of SoLa’s key Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) objectives is to “make Black and brown communities green.” For decades, low-income, minority communities throughout most urban areas have carried the inequitable burden of energy affordability and lived in much older buildings with inefficient appliances, poor insulation, and ineffective heating and cooling systems. SoLa Impact was recently awarded by the Green Building Initiative for their innovative green design and is also the exclusive host of the annual California Green Building Conference in partnership with the LA chapter of the USGBC -- the first of its kind in South LA.During this discussion, we'll talk about how SoLa Impact addresses sustainability in affordable housing and how these same ideas can apply in the Bay Area and other cities.
